1. Well, the time has come. I didn't expect this to ever happen, especially with our player base, but all good things come to an end. I am truely sorry that this experience is over for all of you guys, it hurts me as much as it hurts you guys. We have come so far to what I can proudly call one of the most advanced 718 servers on the internet, packed with content no server has ever achieved before. So much work was put into this, since I started the project last January I have commited a whopping total of ~11,000 updates, tell me when you have seen that much work put into a server. Atleast we had fun, it was such a good run and kept me entertained all this time. This is one of the most sad things that has happened, but I have to let go at this point. This is officially the end of Rage-Scape. Jagex has won. Q&A: Why are you letting an email destroy the server? Not just an email, that did not scare me. I was suspicious, but looking at the headers, it is not a feigned email. I was going to try to keep the server up for as long as possible, waiting till the day I got actual mail from them, but I recieved a call today ordering me to shut down the server within 5 days. That was the final straw, that is where I had to stop. Are you done with RuneScape Private Servers? Somewhat, I have not made a desicion yet. Just because I am done with Rage-Scape, doesn't mean I am completely done with the scene. I will not longer host servers, although I have been offered coding positions on many servers, some of which I am able to transfer my content over to including character files, however I am not sure if I will carry on. I will always help out people if I have the time, but for now my mind isn't made up yet. What will you host now that Rage-Scape is gone? I am going to be starting up a Minecraft server. I may also start developing plugins, we will see. I want to work on something that is completely legal to work on, I don't want to end up in a situation like this again. Will you sell or release Rage-Scape's source? While I do have the legal rights to distribute/sell the source files, I am most likely not going to. I do not want to turn the community into a disaster with the giant mountains of content jam packed into the source. Would you really like to see servers that all look the same AGAIN? Rage-Scape was unique and will stay that way. If I decide to no longer work with anything RuneScape Private Server related, I may sell the source to one person to host, who will need to qualify as appropriate for the job. This will not be cheap at all though, so keep that in mind. Can I still play Rage-Scape? From this point, you will have some time to enjoy the server while it lasts, however in a few days the server must be taken down, permanently. So if you want to live the experience, go ahead and have some fun! Will I still be able to contact you? Yes, of course. I will list some information below so that you can contact me and follow up in my future works, plans, etc. Skype: mabrox97 Whatsapp: 617-794-9332 I am so sorry you guys, this is a very upsetting day for me. Good-Bye Thread: http://rage-scape.com/forums/index.php?/topic/4157-the-end/
 2. Hey guys this is another message from PowerProtectControl and we would like to extend another warm welcome to the server. Any of you that followed us the first few days may have experienced the problems we were having with the DMAC but no longer as both our forums and vps have been moved offshores. Anyone that had an original Aegis client can still use it so we welcome you back if you were lost in the full day of being offline. I am making this post to show a few updates we have put into the game to make it more enjoyable and 80 percent of these updates were recommended by the players! Just a quick reminder before the pictures aegis is a 718/740 server ready to perform and work for its community. If the pictures dont draw you in then please come visit us and come see the server in action :). There will currently be roughly 2-3 support positions open in about a week if the playerbase continues to grow as it has. Remember any member that signs up on the forum by Monday will recieve the veteran cape and hood in game as promotion of our "release week" enjoy. 7. We had a whopping 2 entries! Because of this, voting will only go on until Tuesday. The winner will receive three things: A spot on our forum homepage, a special SoTW winner rank (lasts for a week), and a spot in Chris's signature for the week! Voting ends 3/9/2013 P.S. To those of y'all bitching about "crappy" theme, no. Just no. This could have been an amazing theme had y'all even tried. A lot of the graffiti pieces I've seen were simply beautiful. All you have to do is try. Don't just look at the theme and go, "Nope, not even going to try." You know what I call people like you? Pussies. P.P.S. To the winners that pick the theme and then don't even enter, from now on, you will be disqualified from the next SOTW if you do not give me a good excuse as to why you're not entering. It's kind of shitty to pick a theme such as this and then not even enter.

Goodluck to our 8 contestants, I hope you guys continue the good work up! Voting will end 11/08/2013! Edit: We did have a ninth participant, but I am sad to disqualify him. He had a good submission, but he neglected to include his layer pictures. I waited as long as I could, but it was the deadline, and I had to to do it. Sorry Cri Evry Tiem

 17. Versions

Version 1: Included all specifications about variable types, calculations, and introduction to basic concepts.
[UNRELEASED] Version 2: Included specification about the landscape archive file type and name hash formatting in the landscape file index table.
Forward It's nearly been about a year since I wrote the last Runescape Map System thread and I thought it'd be important to rewrite it with new information about some modern information about the system as well. There will be some examples which refer to the modern cache structure. You can read more about in this thread here. I will not be talking about the older cache protocol because with the exception of the update table, the archive formats are fairly similar. Data Types Some specified data types in this article may be unfamiliar to some. I'll provide a brief explanation on encoding and decoding along with a small background, if any, of when the variable started to become used. Primitives such as an integer, short, or long may be called a dword, word, or qword in accordance with the order previously specified. All data types I didn't specify below can be found on the RSWiki. Smart Variables Smart variables, either wise known as 'SpaceSavers', are variables signed with a specific bit flag(s) to denote their size within the payload. Currently, there are three type of smart variables denoted with A, B, or C. The 6/14 bit smart variable is denoted as 'SpaceSaverB' on the RSWiki when I denote it as SmartA. SmartC is not recorded on the wiki at all and is new as of protocol 7 of the cache child table system. When the size of the variable is determined, the bit flags that defined their size is always removed to find the actual value of the variable. The bit flags will always be found in the most significant byte of the value read.

Smart A - Also known as 'SpaceSaverB' on the RSWiki, this variable is considered either 6/14 bits and is signed with two bit flags although the highest bit flag, 128 decimal or 0x80 hexadecimal, determines if its a word length variable. The variable will always be signed with 64 decimal or 0x40 hexadecimal.
Note: If the variable doesn't fit the expected parameters then the variable is considered illegal.

Encoding: given variable v do if v < 64 && v > 0 then putByte(v | 0x40); else if v < 49152 && v >= 64 then putByte((v >> 8) | 0x40 | 0x80); putByte(v); end
Decoding: do if payload[offset] & 0x80 != 0 then (getByte() - (0x80 | 0x40) << 8) | getByte() else getByte() - 0x40

Smart B - Also known as 'SpaceSaverA' on the RSWiki, this variable is considered either 7/15 bits and is signed with one bit flag, 128 decimal or 0x80 hexadecimal, determines if its a word length variable.
Note: If the variable doesn't fit the expected parameters then the variable is considered illegal.

Encoding: given variable v do if v < 128 && v > 0 then putByte(v); else if v < 32768 && v >= 128 then putByte((v >> 8) | 0x80); putByte(v); end
Decoding: do if payload[offset] & 0x80 != 0 then (getByte() - 0x80 << 8) | getByte() else getByte()

Smart C - Not specified on the RSWiki, this variable is considered either 15/31 bits and is signed with one bit flag, 128 decimal or 0x80 hexadecimal, determines if its a word length variable.
Note: If the variable doesn't fit the expected parameters then the variable is considered illegal.

Encoding: given variable v do if v < 32768 && v > 0 then putWord(v); else if v < 0x7FFFFFFF && v >= 32768 then putWord((v >> 16) | 0x8000); putWord(v); end
Decoding: do if payload[offset] & 0x80 != 0 then (getWord() - 0x8000 << 16) | getWord() else getWord()

String Variables String variables are fixed with the name jstr or jagex string. RSWiki has correct documentation on the first version of the jagex string but does not have specification on the second version of the jagex string variable type. The second version of the jagex string variable type became used around the 602 revision with the introduction of the lobby.

Jstr2 - The second version of the jagex string or rs string which is encoded the same way as the first version but with a null byte put before the string is encoded.
Note: For decoding, it can be done the same way as with the first version of the jagex string after the first null character is read.

Encoding: given variable s do putByte('\0'); putBytes(s.getBytes()); putByte('\0'); end
Decoding: do if getByte() != 0 then string is illegal else ... end

Terminology All the terminology has a base unit, the tile. For specific calculations there are required names for the amount tiles that the term specifies in order to give insight as to what that calculation really affects. Other terms define features which reflect game play such as the map. For all units, the aspect of a third axis is ignored and is just assumed to exist. The third axis can also be called the height level. All units will have a cartesian position but only the tile unit will be absolute.

Tile - The base unit for all calculations which has an absolute cartesian position. The maximum coordinate for both the x and y axis is 0x3FFF or 16383.
Chunk - The smallest unit used in calculations which has an area of 64 tiles; 8 tiles per side of the chunk. This is the most commonly used unit in rendering.
Region - The largest unit used in calculations which has an area of 4096 tiles; 64 tiles per side of the region. All landscape and map files are organized by region.
Map - The built area around a player when either the build region or construct region packet is called. Traditionally has an area of 10816 tiles, 104 tiles per side of the map, but with the Dungeoneering update the size of the map is now allowed to be changed to a variety of sizes.
Height Level - The z coordinate or height of a player. Within the client, there are two height variables. One that is modified by map tile settings and one that is not. The maximum height is 3.
Map Sizes In the build region packets, there is a variable that determines the size of the map built. The sizes are 104, 120, 136, 168. The sizes are listed accordingly to their id of the value that would be sent in order for the map to be built to that size. This is also known as the viewport size. Calculations Note: '>> a' denotes a right bit shift and for all calculations listed below can be seen as dividing by pow(2, a) All of the calculations can be seen as unit calculations. For example when calculating the chunk or region coordinate from a tile:

Chunk calculation: given tile do tile/8 end
Region calculation: given tile do tile/64 end
Any calculation where you are given a unit that is calculating a parent unit from a child unit you will be calculating the base coordinate value because you cannot recover the truncated information from calculating the child unit.

Base chunk calculation: given chunk do chunk * 8 end
Base region calculation: given region do region * 64 end
Calculations where the base calculation is subtracted from the parent calculation is the local calculation.

Local chunk calculation: given chunk, coordinate do coordinate - (chunk * 8) end
Local region calculation: given region, coordinate do coordinate - (region * 64) end
Map Calculations Since the size of a map in chunks is always odd the calculation from one half of a side of a map is determined by dividing the viewport size by 16. This value is used when calculating what regions will be used when either of the build map packets are called.

given mapsize, chunk x as cx, chunk y as cy viewport = mapsize >> 4 for(rx = (cx - viewport) >> 3; rx <= (cx + viewport) >> 3; rx++) for(ry = (cy - viewport) >> 3; ry <= (cy + viewport) >> 3; ry++) ...
Hashes In the modern player update protocol, the use of coordinate hashes are used to keep track of the location of players are they teleport or in the case of offscreen players; keep track of their region or height level. There are two hashes: a 16 bit region hash and a 30 bit coordinate hash. The height is always the most significant bits, and the variant y coordinate is always the least significant bits.

Region Hash - given region x, region y, height do height << 14 | region x << 7 | region y end
Coordinate Hash - given x, y, height do height << 28 | x << 14 | y end
Example Class
/* * Copyright (c) 2012 Hadyn Fitzgerald * * Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy of * this software and associated documentation files (the "Software"), to deal in * the Software without restriction, including without limitation the rights to * use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and/or sell copies of * the Software, and to permit persons to whom the Software is furnished to do so, * subject to the following conditions: * * The above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in all * copies or substantial portions of the Software. * * THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR * IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS * FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT.
